Mamak
Brisbane CBD
Mamak Malaysian Roti & Satay brings the traditional tastes of Kuala Lumpur's Indian-Malay street stalls to Brisbane CBD.
Located in Charlotte St's Little Asia dining precinct, Mamak is a slick, contemporary eatery that draws a crowd for lunch and dinner.
Take a seat outdoors on the brightly coloured street furniture or in the funky high-ceilinged interior, which has an industrial vibe with raw concrete ceiling, pale timber furniture, and shiny steel frames between dining areas.
A touch or warmth is provided by ceiling to floor curtains, a smattering of pot plants and the bustling open kitchen which is fronted with jars of herbs and spices.
Food is ordered and paid for at the table via the contactless ordering system and delivered to the table in an efficient time frame. Mamak is also BYO alcohol with a small corkage charge.
On the menu you'll find a range of heavenly savoury roti - canai (traditional); telur (classic egg); planta (rich & buttery); bawang (sweet red onions); telur bawang (egg & onion); or murtabak (spicy chicken/lamb, cabbage, egg & onion). There's also sweet roti (pisang, kaya, bom & tisu) which is traditionally served with curry or as a dessert with ice-cream)
Satays are melt-in-the- mouth, flame-grilled and served with house-made peanut sauce. Choose from beef or chicken or a mix of both, with serving sizes of half a dozen or a dozen.
And for mains, diners have a choice of traditional curries (tangy fish, spicy lamb, classic chicken or vegetarian); stir-fried calamari or tiger prawns with fiery sambal sauce; Ayem Berembah or Goreng (Malaysian style fried chicken); Rojak (Malaysian style salad with prawn & coconut fritters, fied tofu, eggs & cucumber topped with spicy peanut sauce).
There's also a small selection of noodle and rice dishes, including Mee, Laggi or Nasi Goreng; and Nasi Lemak (known as Malaysia's 'national dish') - fragrant coconut rice with sambal, peanuts, crispy anchovies, cucumber and hard-boiled egg, with a choice of curry fish/lam/chicken or vegetarian, sambal prawn or calamari or fried chicken.
For dessert there's sweet roti, Ais Kacang (red beans, corn, grass jelly, rose-syrup and sweetened milk on shaved ice) or Cendol (starch noodles made from fresh pandan leaves, with gula-melaka syrup, coconut milk and shaved ice) and for drinks there's Malaysian white or black coffee, cham (half tea, half coffee) classic Malaysian sweet tea or hot chocolate.
