The Burrow

West End

The Burrow in West End is the kind of place you always look for but can never find – a homey, rustic hang-out where you can drop in alone with a book or a rowdy bunch of friends and tuck into great coffee, breakfast, burgers, pizza or beer.

Occupying a ramshackle old Queenslander, downstairs is like an exotic den with exposed beams and light bulbs, coloured glass windows and a blackboard wall for doodling, a fridge full of craft beer and carved wooden tables and benches. Upstairs has a groovy grandma's house vibe, with VJ walls, original fretwork, French doors and a weather worn back deck adorned with hanging plants. And at night the action spills out onto the side yard, which is strung with coloured lights and overlooked by a striking graffiti art covered fence.

Yet despite its laidback vibe, what's on offer food and drink wise is quietly top notch. Choose from a mind-boggling array of ciders and craft beers (Belgian, Pilsener, Fruit, Stout, Pale, Brown Or Golden Ales to name a few), a small but carefully chosen batch of wines (think Californian red Chupacubra and Spanish Verdelho) and handmade gourmet pizzas that rank amongst the best in town – one bite of the Big Voo Doo Daddy and your taste bud's life will never be the same.

For lunch pizzas are still on the menu along with delectable burgers, salads and Turkish bread sandwiches while breakfast faves include the El Desperado's taco or the hangover curing 'Off With Your Head' involving bacon, eggs, ranchero beans, roast mushrooms and morcilla with a shot of virgin Mary.

Meanwhile the excellent coffee comes as a choice of the organic fair trade house blend or the daily changing single bean of origin.
