Best Things to do in Ashgrove

Updated: Jun 07, 2025

Ashgrove is a popular inner west suburb of Brisbane, characterised by its 1920s bungalow-style Queenslanders, known as the Ashgrovian, its leafy streets including avenues with garden islands and a host of excellent lifestyle amenities. A little known piece of history of this suburb, which dates from the late 1800's is its link to the royal family, with its historic home Granite House having hosted a future King of England George V (Queen Victoria's grandson).

From artisan bakeries, funky cafes, a chic bistro, top pizza and burger joints, Japanese coffee bar and a 46 year old deli to green walks and playgrounds, here's 20+ of the best things Ashgrove has to offer:

This elegant little Parisian-inspired bistro is dishing up fine food and bespoke wine to lucky locals

Minimalism and impeccable Japanese interior design intersect Brisbane's suburban coffee scene at Kimino

Aside from the cockatoo and galah hillside gatherings, the best part of Dorrington Park is the colourful storybook Enchanted Forest
An artisan cake maker/decorator renowned for her spectacular special occasion cakes, Judy C runs a tiny coffee parlour from her cake shop
Sweet Crumbs is a hidden gem of baked delights in West Ashgrove, nestled between the popular food hubs

Half bakery, half pasticceria, this Italian gem is tucked away from the main Ashgrove action and more than warrants a detour
Chandler Corner, a tiny pocket of shops set back from Waterworks Road, contains local treasure Banneton Bakery

The chic little cafe by day, wine and tapas bar by night can be found tucked away on Waterworks Road

Since 1979, this deli cafe serves traditional products with a café serving light breakfasts, lunches, and Merlo coffee

This historic corner store is a hidden gem - the ceramic studio of artist Kylie Johnson and a fantastic source of gifts and wares

Historical Houses

The oldest house in Ashgrove, Glenlyon, which still stands, was erected in the late 1870's as part of the Glenlyon Estate and the tree-lined path that led from its gates is now a sought after avenue of houses. The other house of note is Granite House, where the grandsons of Queen Victoria (Albert, aka Eddy and George V who became the king of England) stayed.
