Hiking

Updated: Aug 15, 2025

The Flinders Peak hike is a Class Five (Difficult) 3-6 hour walking trail on the outskirts of Ipswich, that rewards hikers with panoramic views from the summit.

Best suited for fit people who are somewhat experienced bushwalkers, the tallest peak in the Greater Brisbane region is rugged and challenging with some steep sections, boulder hopping and rock scramblings.

The Flinders Peak hike

Head off from Flinders Plum Picnic area and after about five or ten minutes, you will reach an area with a large rock cliff feature with a lookout. (There are cliffs here and throughout the hike, so supervision of children is required).

Continuing on, the track is easy to follow, steep in sections and sometimes loose and rocky underfoot. As you gain altitude, the track progresses through a variety of landscapes with a different view each time you stop to have a rest, which makes the hike really interesting and rewards the hiker for the energy being expended.

Before you reach the summit, the track drops down into a gully and works its way around to the southern side below the peak. The drop in temperature and the increase in humidity is noticeable immediately.

Here, there’s a short section of more serious rock scrambling and climbing, then up onto the top where you can enjoy the panoramic views.

With the help of gravity, the return trip down the mountain is a bit quicker, but take care in the sections with loose rocks not to twist an ankles. Take care to keep to the ridge so that you make sure you don’t take any detours on the way back down.

In a nutshell - The highlights of Flinders Peak are the boulder-hopping, scrambling and views. If you are looking for a good challenging hike not far from Ipswich and Brisbane, this mountain is definitely has a “remote” feeling to it which really adds to the adventure!

Need to know - Allow 3-6 hours return for this hike. Hiking boots or trail running shoes are recommended. Before heading up Flinders Peak, don’t forget to take plenty of water and snacks and a camera.
