Toowong Former Library

Toowong

Updated: Mar 08, 2025

Touted as one of the finest examples of post war architecture in Queensland, the former Toowong Library was designed by high profile City Council Chief architect James Birrell (of Centenary Pool fame) and constructed in 1961.

Upon completion its 12 sided space age appearance had it dubbed the spaceship and even though it now rests at the base of a multi storey tower and car park it still commands attention from afar. The outward leaning walls had the function of keeping the books on the shelves while the diagonal grill glazing and remains of the succulent plants and palms around the base simply add to the retro exoticism of the place.
