Phillip Bacon Galleries

Fortitude Valley

Phillip Bacon is one of Australia’s leading art curators and his gallery the premier private gallery of Brisbane. It was in 1974 at the urgings of his artist compatriots Olley, Daws, Blackman and Dickerson that he opened his gallery on the fringe of Fortitude Valley and was subsequently given the seal of approval by avid art aficionado Barry Humphries.

Step inside the split-level Cox Rayner designed interior and it’s guaranteed that you’ll find exhibits by a leading artist or two. Over time the gallery has hosted the works of Rupert Bunny, Lawrence Daws, Margaret Olley, Charles Blackman, Jeffrey Smart and Fred Williams amongst the many art illuminaries and at any given time some of these classic works can be found in the old-style upstairs rooms.

The rest of the light-filled spaces exhibit the best of Australia’s contemporary painters and sculptors.
