Mexicali
Bulimba
Mexicali is a stunning pastel-hued Mexican rooftop bar and taqueria tucked away upstairs from Bulimba's Oxford Street.
From its breezy al fresco perch with retractable clear roof, Mexicali offers views across the neighbouring rooftops of Bulimba and glimpses of the city skyline and woolstores of Teneriffe.
Featuring a striking blue, white and terracotta pink colour scheme and lit with strings of pink fairylights, Mexicali offers a mix of banquettes, booths and bar stool seating, decorated with a scattering of earthenware jugs and tiny cacti pots.
On weekends there's a DJ to further enliven the buzzy atmosphere, making it a perfect stop for a long lunch afternoon sesh or dinner gathering.
The food menu, designed to share, includes entratas of sreet style corn, chicken drumettes, jalapeno poppers, buffalo cauliflower wings and Mexicali chilli salt squid.
A range of delicious classic tacos include Baja style fish; char-grilled chicken achiote; grilled halloumi and black bean; lamb barbacoa and Mexicali beef brisket. There's also Moreton Bay Bug tacos and blue swimmer crab tostadas.
Larger share plates include nachos (beef brisket, chicken achiote or jackfruit) served with guacamole, black beans, queso, chipotle, Pico de Gallo & crema; quesadillas (chorizo, chicken achiote or beef brisket); and Cape Grim rump cap (with chimicurri, salsa and corn tortilla).
And for dessert (postre) there's a choice of horchata and coconut pudding; churros with house-made cajeta caramel; baked xocolate brownie skillet (made with traditional Mexican chocolate and served with ice-cream); and street-style Mexican fruit cup.
Perfect for grazing are the great value banquets (min 2 people) with a choice of The Mexicali (7 courses) or the Chef's Banquet (8 premium courses) with the option to add a Bottomless Drink package to accompany.
On the drinks menu are a selection of house cocktails such as the Mexi-Cola (blanco tequila, coconut liqueur, lime & sugarcane cola); Dragonfruit Mojito; Mexi Mule (vodka, ginger beer, mint & fresh lime); and The Rev Espresso (vanilla-infused tequila, coffee, liqueur, espresso & agave).
There's also a dedicated margarita menu (classic, watermelon, strawberry, passionfruit, chilli, mezcal, coconut, Tommy's or cucumber & jalapeno), red or white sangria, mocktails, a mix of Mexican, US and Australian beers, along with spirits and wines.
