Best Urban Stair Climbs

Brisbane CBD

Urban exercise warriors will love these CBD spots to get in a leg work-out and to build up strength and stamina. We’ve found some of Brisbane’s best public stairs for you to include in your fitness regime and to see your step count really climb.

Wilson Outlook Reserve to Howard Smith Wharves

The newest addition for Brisbane’s stair climb enthusiasts to make the most of is the structure that also houses an elevator down to the popular Howard Smith Wharves precinct from Wilson Outlook Reserve. The 120 steps you’ll encounter here, done at any pace, will definitely see your heart rate increase, with the added bonus of one of the best views of the Story Bridge on offer while you’re at it. Since you’re in the area, the Brisbane Riverwalk that leads to New Farm is a great walk or run.

Kangaroo Point Stairs

Split into two flights, the first set will take you from the walkway along the Brisbane River up to Lower River Terrace. A short walk to the left and the second flight will definitely put your fitness to the test, with 107 steps in total to take you all the way to the Kangaroo Point Lookout Rotunda. Whilst the views across the river to the city are fantastic, don’t underestimate the climb. Keep your eye on the prize.

Jacobs Ladder

Running alongside King Edward Park, the historic Jacob's Ladder stairs date back to the 1920s and offer pedestrian access between Turbot Street and Wickham Terrace. Be warned, the gradual incline will sneak up to you – they are guaranteed to test your stamina.

Riverside Centre

These may look insignificant, but when put on repeat, the three architecturally-designed sets of stairs that lead up from the City Reach Boardwalk to Eagle Street can pack a powerful punch. You’ll find them near popular dining establishments Jade Buddha, near Jellyfish and also near Riverland, and are perfect to do as a circuit to solidly increase your endurance.
