Dannyboys Sandwich Bar
Kelvin Grove
Dannyboys Sandwich Bar is Kelvin Grove Village’s best kept secret – a chef –run establishment that makes the kind of sandwiches that everyone wishes they had in their lunch box.
In fact to the Kelvin Grove village student community Dan the owner is their de facto Mum, ensuring they get a healthy delicious breakfast and lunch that is made from scratch with the greatest of care.
For this funky little sandwich house with its loft style dining area does a roaring trade in artisan sandwiches (and hearty soups), the majority of ingredients of which are either baked, smoked or made on premise. With not a preservative or additive in sight, owner Dan makes the bread daily in the old skool method with just 5 ingredients, whips up his own delicious mayonnaise based on whole free range eggs and even roasts his lamb, chicken and beef in-house.
The result is a crusty baguette-style range of sandwiches (all of which come as Shorts or Longs) that are about as good as it gets. Choose from The Basics (shaved chicken loaf/pastrami/leg ham or turkey breast with tasty cheddar, shredded lettuce and mayo), The Signature ( such as the Tasty Tuna – homemade tuna salad, celery, red onion, cucumber, lemon juice, lettuce and mayo – or The BLT – smoked bacon, sliced tomato, lettuce and mayo) or the Breakfast Sandwiches for those on the run, with fillings of avo/sliced ham/turkey breast/loaded crisp bacon with egg, tasty cheese and onion.
For the ultimate fix try The Gourmet, which come loaded with delicious ingredients in a list that you want to work your way through day by day. Highly recommended from this area are the Greek – roast lamb, tomato, cucumber, red onion, feta, Greek peppers, Kalamata olives, lettuce, mayo and herb dressing and The Halfbrick – oven roasted chicken breast, smoked bacon, avo, tomato, lettuce and house-made ranch dressing.
Sandwiches aside, the home-made soups (cooked up fresh daily) are equally sensational and top value in 3 sizes, starting with a cup and leading up to a bucket for $10: flavours at the time of writing included roasted vine tomato, roasted pumpkin and garlic, vegetable corn chowder, beef chili and the best way we’ve ever found to get a daily recommended intake of broccoli – the broccoli cheddar.
Need to know: Danny Boys has a website and app, for ordering ahead online. In the near future a home delivery service is on the cards. Meantime you'll find them up the hill on Musk Avenue, just outside the main action and above Sago Vietnamese restaurant.
