Global Food Markets
Logan Central
The Global Food Markets, a bustling multi-cultural food bazaar in Logan Central is south east Queensland’s best-kept secret.
On Sunday mornings, a colourful local crowd of Asian, African, Middle Eastern, Indian and Islander customers descend on closed-off Croydon Road to haggle over the cheapest and best selection of exotic fruits and vegetables in the region and feast on authentic South East Asian street food.
On offer, as well as bargain basement everyday green groceries, are a staggering range of produce that is hard to find anywhere else including taro, coconuts, yams, purple sugar cane, red beans, okra, Asian eggplant, durian, plantains, fresh peanuts, snake beans, curry leaves and Asian herbs.
Best of all, the majority of produce is priced from $1- $2 a kilo and sourced from local market gardeners, regional backyards and the like.
Before, during or after shopping make a meal of it in the street food alley that looks and smells like it has been beamed up from a village in South East Asia. Here you’ll find hawkers peddling Thai, Cambodian and Vietnamese street food, with generous plates of food $7 or less.
Not only is this the best value food around, it is also the most authentic in a think-you-died-and-went-to-Asia kind of way.
On offer are plates of Massaman chicken, Noodle or Seafood Tom Yum, Stuffed Fish Ball or Pork Roll skewers, Pad Thai, Grilled Corn with Shallots, Fresh Papaya Salad, Thai Pork Sausages (a must try) and Thai Fried Sweet Potato as well as traditional Thai iced coffee and fresh sugar cane juice.
