Phat Pho

Newstead

Phat Pho is a bustling Vietnamese street food eatery that inhabits a landmark 1920s shop on the border of Newstead and Teneriffe.

Pho, the house specialty, is simmered for four and a half hours with special Vietnamese spices, comes highly recommended and diners have the option of chicken or beef.

Also recommended are the Viet Noodle salads (with rice noodles, mint, peanuts and classic sauce) , with a choice of Nem Nuong, Beef, Chicken, Tofu or delicious Marinated Pork.

Banh Mi Thit is another popular staple served here, as are the Nem Nuong Lettuce Wraps (filled with grilled pork mince), Soft paper Rice and Spring Rolls and Fresh Soft Bao (rice flour bun filled with marinated BBQ pork or Viet style pulled pork).

For something more substantial there’s Rice Dishes including Chicken Fried Rice, Grilled Pork with Jasmine Rice and Caramelized Pork Belly, with, at dinner time, extra dishes such as Lemongrass Chilli Chicken also available.

Drinks-wise, it’s hard to go past the traditional Vietnamese coffee (Caphe Suada) otherwise there’s the usual espresso, latte etc options, pots or cups of tea, home-made lemon soda and a fridge of soft drinks, juices and mineral water.

Lastly, Phat Pho is a popular place so be prepared to wait for tables & food at peak times.

Need to know – A more extended dinner menu is available from Thursday to Saturday nights from 5pm. BYO alcohol. Most menu items (except for Pho and Fresh Soft Bao) are available for takeaway.

Nice to know – There’s also a handful of vegetarian options including spring rolls, Banh Mi and Silken Soft Tofu (crusted in lemon grass chilli) with sweet chilli lime sauce.
