Pepe's Mexican Restaurant
Wynnum
Pepe's Mexican Restaurant on Bayside is a colourful split-level Mexican restaurant and bar in the heart of Wynnum.
Nestled on Bay Terrace, Pepe's, a sibling for the longtime Brisbane institution at Newmarket, has taken over the space formerly occupied by Miss Mexicana.
The upstairs dining room is a feast for the eyes, featuring vibrant, terracotta-coloured walls, with wicker lamp shades and greenery hanging from the high ceiling. The spacious dining area is filled with tables and chairs including a large round table for big groups, plus bench seating along one wall with colourful cushions scattered along it.
The iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is featured throughout, on the walls and the cushions, with additional decor including Mexican folk art, sequined sombreros and cacti.
The menu boasts classic Tex-Mex fare, starting with Mexican street corn, chilli fries, Jalapeno poppers, chilli con queso dip or Pepe's signature guacamole dip.
Next there's a selection of nachos (vegetarian/vegan, chilli con carne, chicken or beef) and tacos (beef, chicken, vegetarian or fish) and mains such as sizzling fajitas; enchilada; seafood burrito; empanadas; quesadillas; or cochinita pibil (pulled pork slow cooked in banana leaves marinated in lime, orange & achiote).
There's also a choice of salads (garden, Mexican or chicken and avocado) while for dessert there's chocolate nachos; churros; tres leches; Mexican flan or Pepe's Mexican pudding.
Downstairs, the ground level eatery and bar provides seating inside and out, with tables and chairs spilling out onto the footpath.
Pepe's Tequila Bar offers a selection of more than 200 varieties of tequila and mezcal, Mexican and Australian beers. Australian, Mexican, Argentinian and Spanish wines; sangria and cocktails.
The cocktail list features 14 flavours of margaritas (including frozen slushie, coca pina, cherry, lychee and hibiscus) as well as house cocktails like Maya Magic, Day of the Dead Zombie, Pina Colada and Cafe Martine.
Good to know - Pepe's is child-friendly with a dedicated kids menu offering hot dogs, crumbed chicken or chicken nuggest and chips; toddler nachos, kids burrito and cheesy quesadilla.
