Breakfast At Customs House

Brisbane Cbd

Updated: Nov 18, 2018

There can be few finer ways to enjoy Sunday morning breakfast in Brisbane than at historic landmark Customs House on the CBD waterfront.

Take a seat in the elegant high-ceilinged dining room where heritage features blend seamlessly with contemporary décor or at a marble-topped table on the covered terrace with one of Brisbane’s most prized river views of the Story Bridge.

Either place makes a great and fitting setting to partake in a leisurely chef-prepared breakfast, with sweeter options including Strawberries with organic yoghurt and house made biscotti, the highly popular Cinnamon French Toast with caramelized banana and peanut butter ice-cream.

Savoury breakfast dishes include Fried Haloumi with heirloom tomatoes, sautéed spinach and ciabatta and Poached Eggs 3 ways – with caramelized onion pudding, wilted spinach and smoked bacon marmalade; baked polenta, Persian feta, cherry tomatoes, spinach and lemon crumble; and smoked salmon, dill hollandaise, asparagus and toasted ciabatta.

Or, for something hearty and traditional, try the Customs House Breakfast – a generous plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, pork sausage, sautéed mushrooms, grilled tomato, hash brown and ciabatta.

To accompany there’s well-brewed coffee, a small range of teas, chai latte, hot chocolate, iced coffee or chocolate, daily fresh squeezed juice and other fruit juices.

Need to know – The cross river ferry runs from Thornton St Kangaroo Point near the Jazz Club to the nearby Riverside Citycat terminal, so why not park the car there and arrive by boat. Alternatively take the Citycat from one of Brisbane’s riverside suburbs. Or, if driving, Customs House has a special flat rate of $7 (valid from 5am-3am) available to diners at Wilsons Parking, Riverside Centre, 123 Eagle St. Parking tickets need to be validated at Customs House to receive discounted rates.

Nice to know – Customs House has an interesting history, so while there take time out to explore its nooks and crannies with cabinets containing remnants of its maritime past, honour boards, original staircase and balcony. During UQ semester times, once a month in the maginficent ballroom (The Long Room) there are free classical concerts on Sundays from 11.30am.
