La Carmela is a colourful Mexican cantina and beer garden occupying a grand heritage-listed building in the Caxton St precinct of Petrie Terrace.
The inviting high-ceilinged interior features a bar fronted by hand-painted tiles, original brick walls, leather booths, neon signage and a smattering of Mexican paraphernalia while outback is a garden bar overlooked by a wall of stunning Mexican street art.
On the food menu you'll find Platos Pequenos (small dishes) such as Street Corn (spiced grilled corn with grated cotifa cheese, coriander and lime), Jalopena Poppers (crumbed & fried jalapenos filled with Monterey Jack), Empanadas and Taquitos (fried potato & cheese mini tacos with grilled cheese and avocado salsa).
There's also kingfish Ceviche or the highly recommended Tostada Prawn Ceviche (crispy tortilla with marinated Queensland prawns in tomato, cucumber, onion, coriander, lime and chilli).
A small range of delicious traditional Tacos (3) and Burritos are available, including Birria Taco (slow cooked marinated beef, queso fresco in a handmade taco with side of consomme), Al Pastor (spit-rasted marinated pork with salsa) and Pollo (marinated char-grilled chicken, pico de gallo and avocado).
In addition there's a selection of Frituras de Maiz (corn chip-based dishes) such as nachos, loaded nachos and guacamole with corn chips), Salads and Sides (Corn or Bean salad, Spiced cauliflower or Mexican slaw) and Dulce such as Churros.
Can't decide? Then order a Bottomless Banquette of food ($25pp) including guacamole and chips; taquitos; street corn; nachos, choice of taco, fries and churros. Add a 1.5 hour drinks banquet for $30pp, including classic margaritas, house wine or beer.
La Carmela has a cracking Mexican flavoured cocktail list, including Strawberry Paloma, Mango Mezcal, Pisco Sour and Lemonade Daiquiri as well as Columbian Chelada or Michelada served with a choice of beer. There's also Sangria and Marg Jugs (classic or watermelon margarita).
