Gold Mine Picnic Area

Mt Coot-Tha

Updated: Oct 05, 2025

Gold Mine Picnic Area on Mt Coot-Tha is beautiful little spot for a picnic or BBQ in the shade of the towering eucalypts and surrounding bushland, not far from the Channel 9 studios.

As you’d imagine in the forest, the abundance of birdlife means the air is filled with the melodic sounds of their songs. As you look up to spot the birds, keep an eye out for koalas which are known to be quite active in this part of Mt Coot-Tha bush, both day and night.

If you’re keen to explore, you can head off on a short walk along Ghost Hole Track which takes only about 15 minutes (650m). Along the way, you’ll see traces of the old workings of the long-abandoned Ghost Hole Mine which operated from the 1940s until it was closed in 1959.

A number of informative plaques along the track are an interesting read, detailing life and the struggles the miners endured. The tracks from this picnic area are not sealed but are in good condition and an easy walk for the most part.

Dogs are allowed in this section of the forest but must remain on-leash at all times.

If you're looking for a solid walk, you can embark from here and walk down to Simpson Falls and the Simpson Falls Picnic Area.

Good to know – There is a water bubbler so if you’re on a bike ride around the mountain, this is a great spot to refill your water bottle. The barbeques are all electric and are free to use.

Need to know – There are no toilet facilities at this picnic spot but the closest are just a few minutes’ drive away at the Mt Coot-Tha Lookout.
