The Bavarian

Petrie Terrace

THE BAVARIAN HAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED AND BEEN REPLACED BY LIME MEXICAN.

The Bavarian is a lively German beer garden and restaurant occupying the heritage-listed Police Wireless Transmission Station (circa 1941) in The Barracks, Petrie Terrace.

Customers can take a seat at the wooden tables under the fairylit fig trees in the bier garden or inside the landmark -story brick building which has also been home to a police station in the 1970's and a series of restaurants since.

For Starters there's a giant or haus made pretzel (which goes down a treat with german bier), Alpenheimer camembert or spicy squid, then, for a hearty appetite, a chance to sample the menu with one of the tasting platters. The Bavarian Tasting Platter (for one) features crispy pork belly, sausage, schnitzel, sauerkraut, red cabbage, mash and bier jus whilst the Big Feast Platter (for 4) is a mix of herb roasted chicken, pork knuckle, chicken schnitzel, haus sausages, pork bao buns, mashed potato, sauerkraut, red cabbage and bier jus.

Schnitzel fans will find 7 types of schnitzel on the menu (including lowenschnitzel, wiener schnitzel and jager schnitzel), all served with a choice of fries, potato salad or mash and there's also 6 varieties of sausage (including frankfurter, cheese kransky and giant thuringer) with side options including mash, mushy peas and bier jus or sauerkraut, potato salad and mustard. meantime Mains include The Bavarian's signature famous crispy pork knuckle., and, for those after something light, a Build Your Own Salad. If possible, save room for dessert - think cinnamon pretzel doughnut with salted caramel dipping sauce, Belgian waffles or haus made apple strudel.

German Biers on offer include Hofbrau, Dunkel, Lowenbrau Paulaner and Spaten whilst there's also a selection of Australian craft beers on tap and international beers including Budweiser, as well as wines and spirits. Another house speciality are the schnapps with an impressive range including haus schnapps in all kinds of flavours. There's also the chance to try the Beers with a twidt including mango or lemon weissbar and Bavaria Diesel (dark lager with coca-cola). Meanwhile, not for the faint-hearted is the 'Beer Tube' - a 2l beer tube filled with a beer or cider of choice, ideally accompanied by a giant pretzel.

Nice to know - There's also a tasty Kinder (kids) menu including mac n cheese balls, cheese burger, hot dog, grilled chicken wrap or grilled cheese sandwich, fries and house-made gelato.

Need to know - 2 hour free undercover parking is available underneath The Barracks and Roma Street station is about an 8-10 min walk away.
