John Oxley River Walk

University Of Qld

Updated: Apr 29, 2020

The gorgeous grounds of the University of Queensland are the backdrop for this scenic Brisbane river walk, which circumnavigates the historic centre of learning dating from 1921.

The level easy grade walk of around 1 hour return begins at Emmanuel College (parking is free along here on weekends and public holidays) and extends to just past the BBC Rowing Club, before returning.

1. Take the upper path alongside the river bank, which rounds the back of St John’s, St Leo’s and Women’s Colleges. Coming up is a fine view of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge, which the path runs under. (It’s worth taking a detour onto the bridge, where there are seats, water fountains and views).

2.  Opposite the UQ rivercat terminal is the Garden of Knowledge, a mini rainforest clump with a path through it. Stick to the river path, which from here has excellent views of Highgate Hill and some of its ornate historical hillside villas. Look out for historic cairns along the way.

3. The path continues past the UQ Sailing Club and BBC Rowing Club before coming to an end and veering to the road. From here turn back and retrace the walk.

Also worth a look while in the vicinity are the magnificent Great Court tuff buildings (dating from 1921) with lawn quadrangle and gargoyles and, around past the Schonell Theatre and Union building, the picturesque university lakes with their prolific waterbird life. And for a touch of culture, drop in to the UQ Art Museum.

Tip: End the walk with a detour to Hawken Drive Village with its variety of student-friendly multicultural eateries such as A Salt and Battery and Brikie Espresso & Gelato Bar.

Need to know: Parking is free and plentiful at UQ on weekends and public holidays
