Government House Open Day

Updated: Aug 04, 2024

Brisbane’s historic Government House in Paddington is holding a very special Open Day on Sunday, August 4, from 11am-3pm, celebrating all that is Queensland.

This year marks 165 years since Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent, allowing Queensland to separate from New South Wales and claim independence as a colony, on 6 June, 1859.

Government House, also known as Fernberg, is Queensland's premier heritage home and the working residence of the Queensland Governor, and inextricably linked to the history and people of Queensland. As the representative of Queensland’s Head of State, King Charles III, the Governor has a role in unifying and promoting our State and its organisations by assisting, promoting, encouraging and recognising Queenslanders across a wide range of community interests.

Her Excellency does so through her patronage of Queensland-based community groups and associations with no political agenda. She has invited many of those organisations to participate in this year’s Open Day, by way of displays, activities and performances demonstrating their contributions to our State.

Soak in the atmosphere while you pair a treat from the King of Cakes with a liquid refreshment from the Tim Adams Specialty Coffee van or enjoy a delicious lunch from London Spuds as you listen to live music from one of several performers.

Visitors are welcome inside the historic house, where knowledgeable volunteer guides will be on hand to talk about the history of the house and the constitutional, ceremonial and community duties of the Governor.
