Mt Edwards Hike

Moogerah Peaks National Park

Mt Edwards is one of the peaks overlooking the magnificent Lake Moogerah, and is part of Moogerah Peaks National Park. About one hour from Brisbane, this small peak can be hiked in combination with a day on the lake, a BBQ at Haigh Park, or as part of a weekend road trip.

Mt Edwards is a conical shaped volcanic peak at 632m in altitude. The hike to the summit is approximately 6km (and 3-3.5 hours) return and quite steep in places. Rated as a Class 5 (difficult) track, it's a great heart-pumping workout.

With perhaps one of the most picturesque starts to any hike in the area, you leave from Haigh Park and walk across the dam wall. Walking across the wall you can enjoy spectacular views across Lake Moogerah to Mt Greville and the Main Range in the west.

From the dam wall, the track is obvious but rough with lots of rocks and roots across the trail. About one third of the way up, the track takes you over some large rock slabs with cliffs to your right. There are lovely views to Little Mt Edwards and Reynolds Creek in the gorge below.

Through the gap between the mountains, you can see towards the township of Kalbar. From here, the track continues upwards and gets harder, with more steep and rocky sections. It’s still a well-worn track but there are no switchbacks or steps to moderate the ascent.

At the top of the mountain you can enjoy a beautiful view out towards Kalbar and the patchwork of agricultural land surrounding the town.

When you’ve finished your hike, enjoy a BBQ or picnic at Haigh Park or Reynolds Creek Recreation Area (below the dam wall). In summer, you can cool off with a swim in Reynolds Creek.

Need to know - Take plenty of water. As there are cliffs present, supervision of children is essential throughout the hike. Toilets and BBQ facilities are at the start of the hike at Haigh Park. Access is only available 6am to 6pm and the gate to the dam wall is locked outside these hours. Although dogs are allowed at Haigh Park where you leave from, dogs are not allowed on the Mt Edwards track, as it is a National Park.
