Cloudland Memorial Arch

Bowen Hills

Updated: Oct 12, 2025

Secreted on a tiny patch of green overlooking Newstead is the Cloudland Memorial Arch, a ‘shrine’ to the once grand ballroom which graced the top of the hill and whose landmark lit-up arch could be seen from afar at night.

It is this arch that artist Jamie MacLean has captured in the little memorial sculpture, which also features panels of Cloudland images and a ceramic paved ‘dance floor’ containing stories from the generations who danced and dreamed in this iconic building which was destroyed by a shady developer’s hench men at 3am on 7th November 1982, sparking a huge public outcry.

Adjacent to the arch is a picnic table and barbecue for those who want to make a day/night of remembering.
