King Tea

Paddington

King Tea is a gorgeous rustic Chinese eatery and bar that takes its unusual name from the sign above the famous snack bar that once occupied its historic Paddington home.

One of Brisbane’s most ambient venues, King Tea features exposed rafters under the corrugated iron roof, stripped back handmade brick walls and the original brick fireplace at the rear.

On the concise food menu are a mix of modern and traditional Chinese dishes with a strong Sichuan flavour, starting with entrees like the 1000 layer pancake, deep fried tofu or prawn toast. There's also Dim Sum including soup dumpling, pot stickers (Shandong pork dumpling) and wonton.

For mains (designed to share) diners can choose from Hoisin BBQ Pork Ribs, King Tea Roast Duck, Kung Pao Chicken or Whole Barramundi Paojiao (whole fried fish with paojiao chilli sauce and magic soy). To accompany there's vegetable sides such as Sichuan cauliflower, stir fried vegetables  or pak choy.

In addition, there's rice and noodle dishes including Beef or Wonton Noodle Soup, King or Vegetarian Fried Rice or Secret Noodle.  And, for afters, the King Tea dessert is a real treat - Deep Fried Chinese Bao with five spice ice-cream, caramel and peanuts.

Lastly, to drink there's a rotating selection of quality wines and beers designed to match the food.

Nice to know - King Tea has plenty of vegetarian and vegan options including their popular Vegan Banquet which is available for $40pp (min 6 people).  A full gluten-free banquet is also available with advance notice.

The menu may have changed since our visit.
