Fairy House
Bardon
Early Russian immigrant and architect Grigori Mikonoshin designed this fanciful three storey A-house house for his daughter and since then it has become a heritage listed icon. The gardens are full of sculptures of classical composers and fairytale characters also sculpted by Grigori.
Grigori had also been instrumental in designing St Nicholas Cathedral in East Brisbane, although had to hand it over to Australian architects and builders who were the only ones permitted to build public buildings at that time (although the onion domes were constructed and fitted to the roof by an 80 year old Russian as no Australian had the expertise).
Perhaps his greatest and least recognised achievement was the design and supervision of the iconic hilltop ballroom Cloudland and its cable car transportation under his anglicised name Gregory Meek.
Nice to know - You can stay in Brisbane's iconic Fairy House, with two private guest suites available to be booked through AirBnB. Link here for more information on staying at Fairy House Bardon.
