Nepalese Peace Pagoda

South Bank

As one of several relics of Expo ’88 that were salvaged and endure as a reminder of the time Brisbane discovered 24 hour partying, the intricate carved Peace Pagoda stands in a rainforest grove at the north-western end of the parklands.

In its first incarnation as the Nepal Pavilion at the Expo, it was one of the more memorable, having been handcrafted in its entirety over a two year period from Terai timber from the southern jungles of Nepal – the work of 160 families.

During Expo it stood sentinel at the southern entrance gates and after Expo concluded was the subject of a bidding war between a Japanese committee and a bunch of concerned Brisbane residents and philanthropists. The latter having won, it was moved to its new home when the Parklands were constructed in 1992.
