Baedeker

Fortitude Valley

Updated: Feb 24, 2024

BAEDEKER HAS CLOSED.

Occupying the landmark heritage-listed Mill (circa 1909) on Constance Street, Fortitude Valley, Baedeker is like stumbling across an old world bar from another century.

Featuring handmade brick walls, cobbled flagstone floor, vintage Chesterfield couches, wine barrel on the bar, luggage racks of old steamer trunks, taxidermy and 1920s chandeliers, Baedeker is evocative of the time when its German traveller namesake wrote the world’s first travel guide.

If the old brick walls of Baedeker could talk, there'd be fascinating stories to tell, from the early days as a flour mill to its years in World War II as an army barracks, and today one of the Valley's most atmospheric bars, full of nooks and crannies and secrets.

With myriad enchanted places to make your own, Baedeker has four fabulous function spaces, including two private dining rooms (one whose entrance is behind a secret bookcase), and a magical outdoor garden bar.

In keeping with the setting, Baedeker's wine and beverage menus have been curated with history firmly in mind. The lists feature old and rare wines, classic cocktails, boutique producers, distilleries, and breweries. As much as possible the lists are Australian, complemented by selections from around the globe.

Baedeker is the perfect place to enjoy a pre or post-dinner bite to eat, with a delicious selection of bar snacks such as wagyu brisket taco, Brie and blue cheese plates or Momofuku style pork Bao buns.

There is also house made chicken liver pate, fresh Tasmanian pacific oyster, or Baedeker's famous house nuts with crunchy bread bites and, for something sweet, chocolate Moulleux with passionfruit gel. For those with an appetite, there as a more substantial dinner menu that is equally delicious.
