Mirchh Masala
Woolloongabba
Mirchh Masala is a secret Indian street food court above Woollongabba's Mirchh Masala Indian Grocery store, that peddles the most authentic (vegetarian) street food to be found anywhere in Brisbane.
All day long members of the Indian community come and go from the brightly lit room to dine in or take-away their fix of traditional regional eats like chutney or Dahl Puri (light fried bread) or Dabeli (a Mumbai based snack of spicy potato mix in a sweet burger bun). The house specialty is the delicious Chole Bhatura (spicy chick peas served with Bhatura, which is a puffy fried bread like puri) and also recommended is the Daahi Bhaalla (a delectable North Indian Chaat comprising fried lentils blended with yoghurt and chutney).
Those who eat in can sit at red window booths overlooking the street or at the quirky red and white space age tables with curved chairs and watch the Bollywood music videos blaring non-stop from the wall mounted TV. Cold drinks, including divine lassi, are available from a fridge by the counter and if looking for something sweet afterwards, the Mirchh Masala grocery store downstairs has a small selection of Indian sweets at the counter.
Need to know - Unlike Western food courts, food doesn't arrive instantaneously and if there's no one at the counter (which is frequently the case) ring the bell for service. Lastly, there is a small onsite car park and if that's full, there is street parking.
