Clarence Restaurant
Woolloongabba
Clarence Restaurant is a cosy 19th century European-style bistro nestled in a row of heritage-listed bars and restaurants in Woolloongabba.
Occupying a historic terrace shop, the narrow 35 seat restaurant combines industrial chic with old world charm, featuring exposed handmade brick walls, soaring ceilings, dim ambient lighting and an original timber staircase to the rear.
In contrast to the setting, the menu is cutting edge contemporary, with seasonal dishes crafted by chef/part-owner (who hails from Nineteen at the Star and Stokehouse Q) from quality locally sourced produce and a cracking concise wine list to accompany.
On the revolving seasonal menu you'll find appetisers such as Sydney rock oysters or Crudites, buffalo curd, anchovy and dried black olive, accompanied by house-baked sourdough and house-cultured butter.
Entrees include the likes of pighead terrine, peas, grapefruit and ginger; raw scallop, black radish and raspberry; tomato, baby peppers, mozzarella sauce & tagete or asparagus, clams, bourride & espelette pepper (highly recommended).
For Mains there are dishes such as chickpeas, trompette zucchini, cherry tomato and pest nage; wild shot venison, black garlic bread sauce, beetroot & blackberry or chicken, Jerusalem artichoke & sunflower seed gravy, with roast potatoes or salad greens for accompaniments.
And for dessert, choices include the likes of rhubarb meringue pie with anise hyssop ice-cream; apricot and botrytis mille feuille or chocolate terrine with cherries and yoghurt sorbet, as well as an artisan cheese plate.
Good to know - Service is impeccable, fronted by the co-owner who has worked some of Australia's best restaurants, and music ranges from retro greats of the 70's and 80's to smooth jazz.
Need to know - There is limited street parking nearby on Merton Rd (off Stanley St) or paid parking at Princess Parking (14 Annerley Rd).
