The Walrus Club
Toowong
Entering through the sunken black cellar door under the Regatta Hotel, The Walrus Club is like stumbling across a forgotten underground speakeasy that has been operating since the 1920's.
Here you'll find Brisbane's most atmospheric bar - a rabbit warren of cool, dimly lit rooms, corridors and alcoves divided by original handmade brick archways, a scattering of vintage leather couches, bars and fireplaces converted into book cases..
With its name derived from the SS Walrus, a floating rum distillery that trawled Qld rivers between 1869 and 1884, the specialty here is rum (traditional molasses based) and the French colonial version, rhum (made of pure sugarcane juice).
The bars, which serve a staggering choice of around 300 rare and unique spirits - from mid-range to premium drops - are staffed by Gatsby-esque bartenders in bow ties and braces, and the music which pipes out of every darkened nook and cranny from the superb new stage.
Renowned for its premium specialty rum list (which reads like a virtual rum diary), The Walrus Club sources its 150+ rums from every corner and island of the Caribbean, Central and South Americas and includes the Appleton Estate 50YO Jamaican Rum, Pusser’s English Navy Rum to name just a few.
The prodigious cocktail menu developed by the in-house Cocktail Connoisseurs has something for everyone. Including flaming cocktails, classic cocktails with a twist, and everything in between, along with a marvellous selection of wine and craft beers.
An exotic tapas menu is also on offer, featuring a wide variety of snacks and hors d’oeuvres prepared by the Regatta Hotel chefs, as well as a range of delicious pizzas (with gluten free bases available).
There's also a great line-up of live entertainment from Thursday to Saturday nights, when you can catch performances by the likes of The Mojo Webb band, West Texas Crude and Scarlet Gypsy Band. Check the upcoming program HERE.
Need to know - Entry is around in the laneway directly behind the Regatta. Look for the dark green awning and tiny Walrus Club insignia at the top of the stairs leading down to a black door.
