Hungry Jose Mexican Bar is a rustic Mexican cantina found tucked away behind a red light bulb-lit doorway inside the warehouse that was once home to the Milton rum distillery.

Step through the doorway and behind the black curtain you'll find a mysterious dim-lit room that could have been beamed up from the border of Mexico, yet with a stage, mirror ball and easel, for the space is also home to Paint Juicy, a flamboyant paint-n-sip studio.

Take a seat in the split level dining area, which looks like a film set, with a lace iron 'balcony', pressed metal bar, pink stage curtains and a scattering of vintage pieces including an old Shell petrol pump, vintage ornate cake stands and a retro portable TV and Mexican music playing from the speakers.

Hungry Jose has a menu of authentic Mexican street food that is amongst the best to be found anywhere in Brisbane with an eclectic bar food menu including pizzas and snacks such as crumbed jalapeno peppers, mac & cheese croquettes and trio of dips.

Hungry Jose's menu is the real deal and includes quesadilas (pulled beef, shredded chicken or mushrom) with a choice of premise-made salsa; and must-try chilaquiles (nachos drizzled with Mexican sauce) or Gringo Nachos (with melted cheese, sour cream, guac, Pico de Gallo and frijoles).

There's also tacos (pulled beef, shredded chicken, battered fish, mushroom or battered squid) and tostadas (pulled beef, shredded chicken or mushroom) as well as street snacks like corn chips with guac or salsa and feta; street corn and churros with nutella.

Drinks from the bar include classic cocktails (Mojito, Espresso Martini, Long Island Iced Tea and Classic Margarita), Stone & Wod or Great Northern beer on tap, a selection of wines and a couple of premixed cans - Vodka Cruiser or Brookvale Union Vodka Lemon Squash.

Good to know - The food menu is available for takeaway and home delivery on both Doordash and Uber Eats.

Need to know - There is a limited amount of street parking out front and on nearby streets.
